DASSE, as it is most often referred to, is one of the academic Departments in the College of Education Studies. The Department is strategically positioned to train effectively high caliber personnel for the Ghana Education Service. Lecturers in the Department has the expertise in the Humanities and teach undergraduate courses in Arts Education, Business Education, Social Sciences Education and Social Studies Education. In addition, the Department offers postgraduate courses in Curriculum and Teaching, but will add to the existing ones six new postgraduate courses in the various undergraduate areas in the near future.
The hallmark of the Department is the provision of quality education. As such, students go through rigorous practical tuition, which distinguishes them from others. This status makes DASSE one of the best Departments in the University of Cape Coast. Although admission into DASSE is very competitive, the Department has the highest number of students.

The College of Education Studies has as its major goal the provision of high education professionals at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in all subject areas. Within this broad goal, the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education (DASSE) has over the years offered Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) programmes that equip graduates with the appropriate expertise in the content, curricula and methodology of the Arts and Social Science subjects. The Department also offers a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in Curriculum and Teaching that prepares graduates for curriculum development and implementation at various levels of the education system in the country.

 To become a centre of excellence for training quality teaching personnel, educational leaders, curriculum experts and specialist as well as technical and professional staff for the Ministry of Education and other sectors of the Ghanaian economy.  It seeks also to create an enabling environment for critical thinking that would motivate both staff and students to be innovative and become internationally competitive. This would be achieved through linkages and collaboration with local and international institutions of higher learning in the sub-region, Africa and beyond.
